OUR NAME

On January 2, 1984, Miami played against Nebraska for the national title in the Orange Bowl.  With 48 seconds remaining, the Cornhuskers scored a touchdown to bring the game within one.  Instead of going for the extra point – this was before the “no tie” rule – and insuring a win based on their rankings going in, Coach Tom Osborne opted for a two-point conversion.  But the pass attempt by Nebraska QB Turner Gill was tipped away by Miami safety Ken Calhoun and the Hurricanes won outright with a final score of
31-30.
This is still considered one of the greatest games of all time and is a fitting tribute to our ethos.
